Getting started with the OverDrive app

You might like our new Libby app—the easiest way to borrow and enjoy ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines from your public library. Get started with Libby on Android, iOS, and Windows 10, or learn more about it.

You can use the OverDrive app to borrow and enjoy digital titles from your library. The OverDrive app is available for Android, Chromebooks, iOS, Fire tablets, and Windows 8/10.

Step 1

Install the OverDrive app from your device's app store or from app.overdrive.com.

Step 2

Open the OverDrive app and follow the prompts to sign in (or sign up) using your library card, Facebook, or a free OverDrive account. Learn which sign-in option is right for you here.

If you're under 13, you can use one of the under-13 sign-in options.

Step 3

In the OverDrive app, find your library's digital collection (see specific steps for Android [including Fire tablets], Chromebooks, iOS, or Windows 8/10).

Once you've found it, click or tap the collection name to start browsing. This will also automatically save the collection to your library list in the app.

Now, choose the image below that looks like the titles in your library's collection.

Step 4

Borrow a title (you'll need to sign into your library to complete this step).

After you borrow a title, you can:

  • Select Read now with Kindle (U.S. only) to complete checkout on Amazon's website and send the book to your Kindle device or Kindle reading app.
  • Select Download to download EPUB ebooks and MP3 audiobooks to the app Bookshelf.
  • Select Add to bookshelf to add streaming videos to the app Bookshelf (Android and iOS only) or Watch now in browser to open them right in your web browser (most other devices).
  • Select Read now in browser to open magazines, read-alongs, or MediaDo Reader ebooks right in your web browser.
  • Close the pop-up window to keep browsing and borrowing.

To see all of your borrowed titles, tap books iconto go to your library Loans page.

To open the titles you downloaded or added to the app, go to your app Bookshelf.

How to change an ebook's font size in the OverDrive app

You can adjust the font size for ebooks in the OverDrive app using the steps below.

In OverDrive for Android, Fire tablets, or Chromebook

  1. Open an ebook from your app Bookshelf.
  2. Tap or click the middle of the screen to open the reader options.
  3. Select the Settings icon.
  4. Select Font size, then pick the one you like.

How to borrow and deliver Kindle Books

  1. Open your library's digital collection (you can find it using www.overdrive.com).
  2. Find a Kindle Book to borrow. You can see all of your library's Kindle Books by selecting the Kindle Books link near the top of the site (or under Menu iconon mobile devices).
    Note: You may want to check whether a Kindle Book has any device restrictions before you borrow it (this is most common for picture books, read-alongs, and graphic novels).
  3. Select Borrow. If prompted, sign into your library.
  4. Choose a lending period for the title (if available).Then, select Borrow again.

  5. After you borrow the title, select Read now with Kindle.
  6. You'll be taken to Amazon's website to finish getting the ebook.
    Note: You must complete this step for the book you borrowed to appear in the "Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account. If the book doesn't appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.

    1. If you're signed into your Amazon account, verify the "Deliver to:" device and select Get Library Book.

    1. If you're not signed into your Amazon account, select Get Library Book, and sign in.

Your Kindle e-reader needs a Wi-Fi connection to download library Kindle Books from Amazon. If you don't have a Wi-Fi connection, you'll need to transfer the title via USB.

Once a book is on your Kindle device or reading app, you can read it just like any other Kindle Book. For specific help reading on your device (like how to change the font or save a bookmark), visit Amazon Device Support.

If you want to read the e-book on a different Kindle device or app, you can deliver it again from Amazon's website during the lending period.
